How Does a Car Subscription Work?

Until recent years, if you wanted regular access to a car your options were to buy or lease one. Now there’s a third option, car subscription services. Subscription services are an integral part of our lives and range from meal delivery, to media streaming and now include automobiles. Car subscription services are still relatively new and are currently offered by a few automakers, car rentals and third party companies like SimpleCar.

How Does a Car Subscription Work?

With the onset of a global pandemic, many people began to work from home and no longer needed a vehicle to commute or maybe re-evaluated their lifestyle and determined that their need for a car had changed. Options like car shares and car rentals have been around for decades, but are usually best for short term such as single day use or a short vacation. A car subscription is the perfect middle ground between a short term rental and leasing or owning a vehicle.

With a car subscription service, you are able to keep the vehicle at home and use it for as long as your subscription remains active and are generally able to cancel and re-start your subscription as needed; if you no longer need a car for a few months, you can simply pause the service and then reactivate. This freedom and flexibility is perhaps the most exciting aspect of a car subscription service.

Some companies offer access to different types of cars where you could use an SUV for a weekend getaway or during winter season and then return to a more commuter friendly model. This type of service takes away the individual expenses of owning a car like insurance and maintenance and allows you all of the benefits of using a car without the hassle of owning or renting one all neatly bundled into a monthly subscription fee
